Hurtigruten’s Biofuel Milestone Signals Greener Future at Sea
Hurtigruten to Make History with Climate-Neutral 4,000km Biofuel Voyage
Hurtigruten, the iconic Norwegian coastal cruise line, is about to make maritime history. On October 29, 2025, the MS Richard With will embark on its first climate-neutral voyage powered entirely by advanced biofuel. This groundbreaking 4,000-kilometre journey sails along Norway’s stunning coastline, from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
A First for the Norwegian Coast
While Hurtigruten’s ships already use blended biofuels, this will be the first sailing on the Bergen-Kirkenes route fueled 100% by advanced biofuel (HVO100). The battery-hybrid vessel will also connect to shore power wherever available, making the trip completely climate neutral.
“Our ships already sail on blended biofuel, but for the first time we will carry out the entire sailing on 100% advanced biofuel,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten. “This voyage shows how biofuel can play a key role in achieving Norway’s climate goals.”
Major Emission Reductions
Since 2022, Hurtigruten has invested €100 million in technical and environmental upgrades to reduce CO₂ and NOx emissions. The advanced biofuel powering this voyage is derived from renewable waste materials, making it inherently climate neutral.
“Advanced biofuels make it possible to achieve major emission cuts with our existing fleet,” said Felin. “This is proven, safe technology that helps protect the climate without building new ships.”
Sea Zero: A Glimpse at the Future
Hurtigruten is also investing in long-term solutions through its Sea Zero program, aimed at designing ships that can sail emission-free in normal operation. Collaborating with Sintef and other maritime partners, the company envisions new vessels that reduce total energy demand by 40–50%, powered primarily by batteries and assisted by sails, air-lubricated hulls, and innovative propeller designs.
Why This Matters
This milestone isn’t just a symbolic gesture, it’s a tangible step toward sustainable cruising. For passengers, it’s an opportunity to enjoy Norway’s breathtaking fjords, Arctic landscapes, and northern lights while leaving almost no carbon footprint.
With the MS Richard With leading the charge, Hurtigruten is proving that sustainability and adventure can coexist, and that the future of cruising may be greener than ever.
