Royal Caribbean Reveals Plans for New Mahahual Community Centre

The new centre will bring expanded programmes, gathering spaces and sports facilities to the heart of Mahahual

Royal Caribbean is continuing its commitment to the community of Mahahual, Mexico, with plans for a brand-new community centre designed around the people who live there.

And this isn't just a case of adding a few extra rooms and calling it a day.

The new Mahahual K’iin Community Centre is planned as a larger and more accessible home for education, recreation, cultural activities and community gatherings, giving local families and residents more space to learn, meet and spend time together.

A name chosen by the community

First things first, the name is rather lovely.

Mahahual K’iin means “the sun of Mahahual”, and it wasn't picked by someone sitting in a boardroom with a particularly enthusiastic thesaurus.

The name was proposed and selected through a community vote, reflecting the centre's connection to local pride and the people it is intended to serve.

The new facility will be located along the Carretera Cafetal-Mahahual, right in the heart of town, making it easier for more residents to access.

And yes, there will be plenty of room to play

The plans aren't all about workshops and educational programmes either.

Outside, the new centre is set to include a soccer pitch, which will provide space for youth programmes, friendly matches and community gatherings.

There will also be basketball and volleyball courts, giving local residents even more opportunities to get active.

So while we might associate Royal Caribbean with water slides, cocktails and ships packed with things to do, this particular project is all about creating opportunities on dry land.

Building on more than a decade of community work

The new centre will build on a community space that has served Mahahual since 2014.

Over the years, it has hosted workshops, welcomed volunteers and supported children and families through programmes centred around learning, creativity, wellness and community connection.

The new facility is intended to take that work a step further, with more space, improved access and additional opportunities for residents to learn, connect and grow.

Senaida Gómez, director of the Mahahual K’iin Community Centre, said the new phase was shaped by the strength, participation and dreams of the local community.

She added that the centre will help expand its impact, strengthen its programmes and create safe spaces for children, young people and families.

Royal Caribbean's commitment to Mahahual

The project forms part of Royal Caribbean's wider commitment to Mahahual, where the company owns and operates the Port of Costa Maya.

Royal Caribbean says it will continue working alongside residents, community leaders and local authorities on initiatives designed to support community wellbeing, environmental care and local opportunities.

Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said Mahahual is an important community for the company and that the next phase is about turning its commitment into action.

The company plans to begin construction once the necessary permits and approvals have been obtained.

And ultimately, that's what makes this project rather nice to see.

While cruise ships are busy taking guests off to explore the world, Royal Caribbean is also putting investment into a place that local families actually call home.
